Island Spotlight

The island for the month is...

CAHAWBA

[Distance from Isla Empieza]: A week if you can find it in the fog.

[Direction from Isla Empieza]: NorthWest

[Terrain]: The island appears unapproachable with tall craggy faced cliffs appearing out of the thick fog and a shallow seabed making it difficult for larger ships to get close, but there is a small split of beach that a long boat can land on. The island is forested with sections of firm ground mostly covered with a kind of pine tree and a few patches of swamp in the low areas. There is a tall mountain as craggy as the cliffs that surround the island, but it is difficult to climb to the top. A series of sea caves have been eaten into the rocky shore of the island. Some of these lead deep under the mountain. They can be big enough to walk upright while to explore others you may have to dive under the sea water and swim until another pocket of air can be found further down the tunnel. Local legend says there are hidden secrets both on the mountain and on the island itself... some more pleasant than others.

[Weather]: This is an island cloaked in a constant fog, sometimes so thick you can not see in front of you but more often it is a light haze that gives the island an eerie appearance when the faint sunlight filters through. Most of the time the air is cool but not cold. Rain may fall either as a light drizzle or as a heavy thunderstorm.

[Is the island inhabited?]: Yes.

[If so, what is the culture like here?]: There is a small population of less than a hundred people who live in the old battered town near the beach or scattered through the forests and swamps of the island. Most who can not stand the strange occurrences of the island or it's creepy reputation have moved away leaving only the more spiritual or wicked behind. They are a very suspicious lot, wary of strangers, and may bar their doors against newcomers when they first arrive. Given time they will warm to travelers, but they do like to make sure new arrivals are not spirits or demons first. These kinds of creatures are a very real threat on the island. Be careful though, that kindly older lady offering you tea might be a practitioner of dark magic trying to cast a spell on you!

[Island peculiarities]: A strange thing has been happening on the island since a young girl died in the ocean surf after a storm nearly eighty years ago. Since her death, dolls have been washing up on shore. These creepy dolls are almost worshiped by the locals who tie them to the trees and decorate the island with any loose arms and legs of the toys that they find.

The dense forest is said to hold a dark force, no one ever goes there at night, but there is almost a pull to the area that draws people in. Often these people are found, but usually long after they have died.

The island also has a Black Magic Market. It is no secret that the natives of the island dabble in the occult. How could they not living on an island this haunted? The Black Magic Market is where you can find all kinds of magical potions and talismans to ward off evil forces... Or draw them to you.

On All Hallow's Eve there is a celebration where the locals light candles, walk to the graveyard that overlooks their city, and throw a massive party that lasts until dawn. It helps to passive the spirits of the dead... Or so it is claimed.

The locals often speak of strange glowing lights and noises in the undersea cave system. They believe this to be the work of spirits, but is it really?
